Review

This book is a very good introduction to diving covering all of the basics and introducing you to different aspects of diving so you can go and research the areas that you find interesting.  It covers all aspects of the BSAC Ocean Diver diver course, with some extra information thrown in around it.

If you are learning to dive, or have not dived for a while, this is a very good book to have, it assumes nothing and tells you everything!

If you have not been issued this as part of your course materials, I highly recommend spending the money to add it to your dive notes!

Ben Finnegan, or Fin, is a treasure hunter with an obsession about the Queen’s Dowry, an 18th Century treasure that sunk and has never been found. Until now he has had his wife, Tess, helping him search for clues on it’s possible whereabouts, but she has had enough and divorces him. She hopes to return home to finish her PhD, until a clue is unearthed that sends them on their way to finding that treasure Fin and Tess are obsessed about. Review

If you are stuck in on a cold and rainy winter evening and would like to bring some Florida summer into your living room, this is the film to watch. It won’t win any awards, but it will still transport you if you want it to. With Matthew McConaughey (with his shirt off for most of the movie, if that sort of thing turns you on!) and Kate Hudson leading the cast and Donald Sutherland in a support role, you can’t go far wrong when one or more of them are on screen, but it does loose it slightly when they aren’t on screen.

Many people liken it to Sahara, and I can see that connection as far as Matt McConaughey is in both, but other than that I’m not seeing it. Plus, as much as I like Sahara, I don’t find it a great film…the book is much better!

I suppose the main reason I like this film is because they go diving in a gorgeous location, and you can forget everything else as you follow the characters along their journey in the gorgeous weather! Other than that it is pretty much mass produced plastic as I like to call it!

Jacques and Enzo spend their days as young boys free diving in the Med until Jacques’ father dies in a tragic accident.  Years later Jacques is working with some scientists who monitor his almost dolphin-like state while he is diving.  He meets Johanna who has come to sort out an insurance issue.  She has to return home before she gets to know Jacques, so when she hears that Jacques will be in Italy for some diving championships, she makes up a story to get her firm to send her to Italy.  Enzo is also there at the championships – he actually orchestrated for Jacques to be there.  The story is essentially about the difficult relationship between Jacques and Johanna as well as the rivalry between Jacques and Enzo.

Review

It’s long!  I think this is one you should watch if you are interested in diving, if only so you can say you’ve watched it.  I found it a little long, but I did quite enjoy it.  I also know people who thought it was a waste of time.  If you have the opportunity to watch it, give it a chance – some of the underwater cinematography was captivating – but then I wish I lived underwater, so there you are!
